It is a romance of the so-called frontiersmen, popularized in the 14th century through minstrels, and which constitute poetic documents of the history and intrahistory of two opposing communities (the Christian and the Muslim). It speaks of more or less truthful facts and of people belonging to the common history of León and Galicia.
In it, once again, appears the figure of King Don Sancho linked to the myth of the young Christian captive in the Muslim territory of the iberian Peninsula, and whom he is preparing to release.
The original melody is built in phrygian mode, one of the medieval musical modes, on which this choral version is also performed, finally bringing it to the point of the so-called gypsy and arabic scales; hence its title.
